⚠️ Critical Distinction: Private vs. Federal Loans
Every government forgiveness program — PSLF, income-driven repayment forgiveness, Biden student loan forgiveness, Teacher Loan Forgiveness — applies only to federal student loans. If your loans are private, none of these programs apply. Period. PSLA Center helps private loan borrowers only.
The Truth About Private Student Loan Forgiveness
If you've been searching for private student loan forgiveness, you've probably found a lot of confusing and misleading information. Much of it is written about federal loans and doesn't clarify the distinction. Some of it is published by companies trying to sell you debt settlement services that don't work for private loans. Here's the unvarnished truth:
There are no federal forgiveness programs for private student loans. There have never been any. And there are none currently proposed that would apply to private loans. The federal government has no authority over privately issued loan contracts between you and a bank or financial institution.
This doesn't mean you're out of options. It means the options look different — and that's exactly what PSLA Center was built to provide.
Why Every Federal Forgiveness Program Excludes Private Loans
Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF)
PSLF forgives the remaining balance on federal Direct Loans after 120 qualifying payments while working full-time for a qualifying employer (government, nonprofit). Private loans are not Direct Loans and are completely ineligible — regardless of where you work or how long you've been making payments.
Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) Forgiveness
IDR plans — SAVE, PAYE, IBR, ICR — are repayment options for federal loans only. They cap your payment based on income and forgive the remainder after 20 to 25 years. Private lenders are under no obligation to offer income-based payments and most do not.
Teacher Loan Forgiveness
Forgives up to $17,500 in federal Direct Loans for teachers in low-income schools after 5 consecutive years of service. Private loans are not eligible.
Biden Administration Forgiveness
Various executive actions and proposals during the Biden administration applied only to federal student loan borrowers. Private loans were explicitly excluded from every plan proposed or implemented.
What Scam Companies Don't Want You to Know
A whole industry has emerged targeting private student loan borrowers with false promises of forgiveness, settlement, or relief. These companies charge upfront fees, collect monthly payments, do nothing of substance, and leave borrowers worse off than before.
Watch out for any company that:
- Promises "forgiveness" for private student loans
- Charges large upfront fees before doing any work
- Claims to be affiliated with your lender or the government
- Asks you to stop making payments while they "negotiate"
- Cannot clearly explain the legal basis for how they help you
PSLA Center has a clear legal basis: the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. We challenge the collection agency's documented right to collect. We have a 99% success rate and have been doing this since 2012 — longer than any other organization in this space.
What Actually Works: Debt Validation
When a private student loan goes into default, the original lender typically sells the debt to a collection agency — often for a fraction of the face value. That sale requires complete documentation proving the transfer of legal ownership. The debt may then be sold again, and again.
Each sale requires documentation. Records get lost. Transfer paperwork is incomplete. Collection agencies frequently attempt to collect on debts they cannot fully document. The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act requires them to provide complete validation of the debt when challenged — and many cannot.
When a collection agency cannot validate a debt, it can be legally invalidated. This is not a loophole or a technicality — it is a federal consumer protection law working exactly as intended.
